Online Workshop: Career Planning for PhD Students

Course Area 4: »Transferable Skills Training«

Target Group

PhD students of all research areas

Rationale

Post-doctoral career opportunities are plentiful and frequently obscured in the non-academic job market. This course will enable participants to discuss and share best practices in constructing a curriculum vitae (CV) or application that accurately reflects their passion, skills, and academic knowledge suitable for their desired position. In addition, the course will address other pertinent topics and questions, such as what qualifications are needed for a position in the industry. Have participants considered entrepreneurship as an option? And how can participants optimally prepare for an interview?

Content

  • Increase your visibility as a scientist: building a reputation
  • Professional networks and how to use them - online and offline
  • Career alternatives
  • Optimizing your CV and application
  • Transferable skills for transitioning outside academia
  • Common interview questions
  • Elevator pitch

Trainer

Dr Havemann obtained a PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen (GER) in 2010. Her working experience covers NGOs, science startups and international institutions, including the United Nations. Johanna’s goal is to equip scientists with the tools and techniques they need for a successful academic career.
