New FÜS module for students: War in the Media

Interdisciplinary seminar on the Ukraine conflict from April 11, 2022.

In the context of the current Ukraine conflict, the seminar will look at war in its medialization under different thematic aspects using historical examples. How do wars and warmongers, wars and their victims present themselves in the media? Thematic approaches offer, among others, forms of the aestheticization of war, the veteran motif (using the example of the Vietnam War), the topic of flight from war zones (using the example of the so-called refugee crisis 2015), asymmetric wars, terrorism and the so-called War on Terror, the argumentation figure of the just war as well as war techniques and forms of digital and virtual warfare.

In the course of this, the characteristics and structures of the various forms of medialization of war, terror and military violence in documentary and fictional media (especially feature film) will be analyzed on the basis of media studies methods. Subsequently, the concepts and theories developed are to be tested in theoretical (essays/homeworks), but preferably in practical forms of work (documentaries and AV formats). Explicit: The certificate of achievement should be in the form of a film project (in group work).
