Mathematicians from 5 nations meet for digital exchange of experience

The 1st EUNICE Symposium on Pure and Applied Mathematics will be held on 7 July at the BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg.

On Wednesday, 7 July, the 1st EUNICE Symposium on Pure and Applied Mathematics will be held at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg from 8 am to 6.30 pm. About 40 scientists from the University of Cantabria (Spain), the University of Catania (Italy), the University of Mons (Belgium), the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France (France) and the BTU will participate in the online conference. This symposium combines general talks by the participating universities about their institution and the professional orientation of the respective mathematics departments with 32 specialised scientific lectures from different areas of mathematics.

The impetus for this event was provided by the Institute of Mathematics at the BTU, which is also organising the symposium - in charge are Professor Armin Fügenschuh and the Department of Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Optimisation. "With the first maths symposium of the EUNICE network, we want to introduce colleagues from the different locations to each other. We would like to initiate an exchange of ideas and experiences, on the basis of which students can study abroad and guest researchers will soon be able to carry out joint research work," explains Prof. Dr. Armin Fügenschuh.

The event is intended to help participants present projects and subject areas for which they are interested in international cooperation with academics from partner universities. The aim is to stimulate and intensify networking between the universities in the field of mathematics in order to carry out joint projects, facilitate research stays and promote student exchange.

Background EUNICE

The BTU forms the alliance EUNICE (European UNIversity for Customised Education) with the University of Cantabria, the University of Catania, the University of Mons, the Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France, the University of Vaasa and the Poznań University of Technology. What all partner universities have in common is that they tend to be located away from the urban centres of the respective countries. In addition, the regions of some partner universities are also facing the challenges of structural change.

EUNICE aims to solve social and economic problems - both globally and locally. With a clear vision for the future, the alliance strives to achieve multiple goals: In addition to customised and flexible education, the shaping of a European identity and close cooperation with the regional economy are of great importance to the consortium. Thanks to the transnational university contacts, the often very regionally oriented economy can be internationalised and thus become more competitive. In addition, by intensifying the cooperation within the alliance, students, scientists and employees have the opportunity to network more closely with each other and to make better use of the joint offers, infrastructure and expertise from all areas.
