Employment and gender relations in transition

The signs of the crisis in recent years have exacerbated social inequality in two respects: Not only is social inequality deepening within many societies worldwide, but the gap between individual states remains. In the EU, too, countries with high economic strength and relatively low unemployment figures are facing those with weak economic activity and high unemployment figures. The social crises also have a clear gender side: Not only do women have lower incomes and an increased risk of becoming unemployed, they are also more precarious. They also do most of the reproductive work, that is, caring for children and those in need of care, as well as household chores.

In this context, socialization through the labor market and the private household is taken into account with special consideration of gender and researched under the sign of the multiple crises of recent years. The increase in low-paid, household-related service activities in the Global North and the increased feminization of migration in the context of an international division of labor can only be understood as a care crisis in connection with the withdrawal of welfare state security systems. The department is therefore devoted to examining the connection between precarity and gender, in particular the gender pay gap, but also the historical development of gendered employment relationships.
