Regional policy as a driver of eco-innovation

Global phenomena of climate change on the one hand and not predictable technological risks of energy supply on the other hand are challenging not only Germany and the European Union but society, politics, science and industry worldwide. The answers to these challenges are very different. Some countries are screening their existing energy concepts and are searching ways of alternative energy, such as legislation on clean technologies, so-called eco-innovation.

Other countries do not appear to leave their traditional energy paths. A spatially differentiated perspective shows, however, that even in the latter countries efforts for sustainable energy supply exist on the local level. The international agenda of the Energy Plan of the Commission of Public Utilities of the State of California shows that local actors increasingly understand not only the national level as a framework, but also act internationally. This research project examine how the global initiatives for eco-innovation can be influenced not only through national initiatives, but also bottom-up by state or regional engagement.
