WHY? – COURSE MOTIVATION

In contrast to scholars working in the humanities, natural scientists, computer scientists, and engineers usually write long texts for the first time when writing their thesis. As a consequence, specific problems may occur especially with regard to scientific style and the presentation of arguments. This writing course specifically addresses these problems.

During your PhD or your postdoc, these problems may become evident – for example, your articles may get negative peer reviews or you may have problems writing your dissertation.

In this course, you will learn to write scientific texts that convince your readers both with your writing style and your arguments. The goal of the course is for you to be able to write texts your colleagues will read and discuss with pleasure. We will focus not so much on the presentation of data in tables or graphs, but rather on how to acquire a convincing prose style – whether in abstracts, in reviews, in articles, or in your dissertation.

WHAT? – COURSE CONTENT

We have adjusted the following contents to the needs of natural scientists, computer scientists, and engineers:

  • How do I write logically convincing scientific texts?
  • How do I write rhetorically convincing scientific texts?
  • How do I write clear and understandable scientific texts by optimizing the structure of my texts, paragraphs, and sentences?
  • How do I reconstruct and criticize opposing scientific standpoints?
  • How do I write succinct abstracts?
  • How do I avoid typical pitfalls in the peer review process?
  • How do I manage my writing time (for scientific articles or book projects, for example)?

HOW? – COURSE METHOD

The course is interactive throughout. We will train all theoretical contents by doing many practical exercises. You will have the opportunity to mail us questions or excerpts of your own texts prior to the course. This allows us to work with your text examples and to adjust the course to your needs in the best way.

Trainer

Till Hopfe is founder and co-owner of ProArgument. ProArgument is a training and consulting company that trains scientists and executives to think critically and to fend off manipulation attempts. He studied philosophy and German philology and is currently a researcher in the DFG-founded research project Everyday Picture of the World and Naïve Realism.

Adem Mulamustafić trains scientists and executives to think critically and to react appropriately to manipulation attempts. Together with Till Hopfe he is the founder and owner of ProArgument. He studied philosophy and economy and is currently a researcher in the DFG-founded research project Everyday Picture of the World and Naïve Realism.
