Description

The Master's programme Culture and Technology is a cultural studies degree programme with a strong philosophical basis. The concept of the programme is founded on a sophisticated notion of culture: Culture' is defined as the epitome of human practice. The range of topics is therefore broad and ranges from a discussion on aesthetics and art and analyses of new media, to current debates on key technologies. Technology is understood as cultural production, which has shaped modern human life and determined our future more than anything else. The importance, dynamics and consequences of the mechanization of human life are central to the problem areas, which form the thematic focus of this course.

The programme can be pursued in two ways. In the A-branch of study, cultural philosophy and cultural studies are the central focal points. Classical and contemporary theories of theoretical and practical philosophy and cultural theory are systematically investigated in order to approach technology as cultural production. The B-branch of study is in turn more focused on concrete engagement with technology. In this branch, the application of approaches to technology drawn from humanities, social science and cultural studies comes to the foreground. However, in contrast to conventional philosophy courses, both branches of the course are always focussed on material content, cultural and technological products and processes, i.e. distinctly object-oriented and contemporary.
