Every January the BTU Cottbus–Senftenberg holds its university ball for which the canteen on the central campus is transformed into a ballroom. For one night, students, teachers, employees and friends of the university celebrate together. The university prizes for the best academic dissertations of the university and the individual faculties are always awarded annually, also in January. The summer semester at the BTU, meanwhile, is welcomed with the event "Classic & Clubbing". The special combination lies in the club atmosphere which ensures a great mood and the brilliant midnight concert given by the state theatre’s symphony orchestra in the Audimax. The open day is not only aimed at potential students but also offers an opportunity for visitors to find out more about the university’s projects and facilities and talk to researchers. In addition, it is closely associated with the student summer party. The new academic year begins with the start of the winter semester early October and the celebratory matriculation and the OTIWO. Students, professors and employees of the BTU celebrate the end of the year together in a concert of the "Collegium musicum" in the Audimax on the central campus.

At the beginning of the winter semester, all first semester students and their families are invited to the celebratory matriculation to mark the start of this new phase of their lives. In keeping with tradition, students enter their names under the respective course in the BTU’s matriculation book. The German grants and the DAAD prize are also awarded at this ceremony.
