The idea to collect artefacts is as old as mankind. Presenting collections is not a recent invention either. The term "museum" itself is derived from sanctuaries of "Muses" – goddesses of the arts. The popular idea of presenting collections started at the end of the 18th and in the beginning of the 19th century. Enlightment thought forced aristocracy and rich merchants to open their collections to the public, thus becoming part of a new education system.

Presenting artefacts has always been related to the fields of architecture and design and the idea to communicate the values and significance of different pieces of a collection. Communication systems completely changed in the last 100 years and especially in the last 25 years.

In the seminar, the field of museology will be combined with the fields of architecture and exhibition design. Every week we will visit a museum or an exhibition. Equipped with the knowledge of recent and canonical texts from the field of museology, the students will go on field trips to discuss structures, classification systems, information systems and space itself and develop their own position towards contradicting museum concepts and exhibition designs.
