Short Bio

Olukoya is a Conservation Architect and Heritage Management consultant with a doctoral degree in Heritage Studies from Brandenburg Technical University, Germany. He is a founder of Vernacular Heritage Initiative, a non-profit NGO concerned with promoting the conservation of vernacular heritage in rural landscapes in Africa. His doctoral research focused on the conservation and management of vernacular heritage in the context of climate change impacts. During his doctoral program Olukoya assisted in teaching Heritage Impact Assessment (HIA) in the World Heritage Program at Brandenburg Technical University, Germany. His professional practice specializes in Heritage Impact Assessment and Architectural Conservation. He has worked on a number of international heritage conservation projects in Germany, Cyprus, Tanzania, Malawi and Nigeria. He is a scientific member of ICOMOS International Committee on Vernacular Architecture (CIAV), International Association of Impact Assessment (IAIA), ICOMOS Nigeria, Vernacular Architecture Forum (VAF), Association of Critical Heritage Studies, and the International Network for Traditional Building, Architecture & Urbanism (INTBAU). He is a German Academic Exchange (DAAD) Alumni.

What will you remember most of your time at BTU Cottbus and in the PhD Programme Heritage Studies?

The kindness of my supervisor, the financial support of DAAD, the support from the coordinator of the PhD program and in general, the kindness of Cottbus people. 

What advice to you have for prospective PhD candidates at BTU Cottbus?

Remain focused and foster a good relationship with your supervisor, a lot depends on this relationship.
