Energy savings at the BTU

The tense energy supply situation in which the Federal Republic of Germany finds itself also presents us with special challenges. In order to be able to carry out our teaching and research operations as unrestrictedly as possible in the coming months, we have to save energy on the one hand and consider the restriction in energy supply or even the sudden failure of parts of the infrastructure on the other.

Thank you for your consideration and solidarity. Only together can we manage the energy supply crisis in the best possible way, keep our university operations running and guarantee our students successful studies.

Energy saving measures

To avoid an emergency situation, the state of Brandenburg and the federal government have drawn up catalogs of measures. First federal measures for the public sector, which we will implement at the BTU, are:

  • Establishment of max. air temperatures, depending on the activity (e.g. office, teaching rooms max. 19°C).
  • No heating of corridors, stairwells, entrance halls, storage and technical rooms → To achieve these targets, building management will adjust heating controls.
  • Switching off outdoor lighting of buildings.

Others include:

  • Turning off unneeded lighting (security lighting remains).
  • Turning off unneeded appliances (e.g., computers, monitors, machines, refrigerators, coffee makers, kettles)
  • Prohibition of stand-by circuits (pull out plugs, turn off switches and distributors)
  • When leaving rooms: switch off lights and heating and close windows
  • Shock ventilation instead of windows on tilt position
  • Night setback.

In order not to overload the BTU power grid and to avoid possible fires, it is not permitted to use electrical auxiliary heaters (fan heaters, oil radiators, convectors or similar) in the BTU service rooms. This applies to both private and official equipment.
