Target Group

PhD students of all research areas

This course consists of 6 short modules (usually 1-2 hrs each). All modules will be offered between 25 September and 30 October 2023. For a detailed overview check the description of the 6 modules below. 

Content & Dates

Module 1 – Welcome & Strategic Reading I

  • Monday, 25 October, 10:00 - 11:30 h: 30 min. introduction and programme overview + 1 hr Reading Strategies

Module 2 – Strategic Reading II

  • Monday, 2 October, 10:00 - 11:00 h: Introduction to peer review

Module 3 – Scientific Writing I

  • Tuesday, 11 October, 10:00 - 11:00 h: Writing Style
  1. CPR – Concision, Precision, and Revision
  2. Singular-plural pairs and active and passive voices
  3. Appropriate use of Figures and Tables
  4. The concept of cautious language: Hedging
  5. What makes a good title?

Module 4 – Scientific Writing II

  • Monday, 16 October, 10:00 - 11:00 h: Writing Structure
  1. IMRaD structure to present original research
  2. Transitions between sentences and paragraphs
  3. The Abstract as a stand-alone entity of a full research paper
  4. Punctuation, Mechanics, Capitalization and Spelling
  5. Citation Systems and References

Module 5 – Scholarly Publishing I

  • Monday, 23 October, 10:00 - 11:00 h: Scholarly publishing venues, journal selection strategy

Module 6 – Scholarly Publishing II

  • Monday, 30 October, 10:00 - 11:00 h: Knowledge Transfer through Open Science practices

Trainer

Dr. Havemann obtained a PhD from the Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology in Tübingen (GER) in 2010. Her working experience covers NGOs, science startups and international institutions including the United Nations. Johanna’s goal is to equip scientists with the tools and techniques they need for a successful academic career. It is important to her that the participants develop their own personal style tailored to their specific skills and prerequisites. Topics that she covers in her courses include Digital Research Communication, Scientific Writing and Presentation Techniques for Scientists.
