DFG-Project "MeReVeS" Modeling and Reduction of Video Streaming's Environmental Impact

Description

The MeReVeS project investigates the environmental impact of video streaming across the complete delivery chain, including content generation and processing, transmission, and display on end-user devices. Beyond the analysis of energy consumption during operation, the project also addresses the environmental impact associated with the production and life cycle of the underlying hardware and infrastructure, such as servers, network equipment, and user devices.

To this end, MeReVeS combines energy measurement, life cycle assessment, environmental modeling, and system-level analysis to better understand how technical design choices influence sustainability. A central goal of the project is to develop methods for analyzing and comparing the ecological footprint of different video delivery scenarios.

Based on these insights, the project aims to identify and evaluate strategies for reducing the environmental footprint of video delivery systems and to support the development of more energy-efficient and sustainable multimedia technologies.
