Learning Outcome:

The students will:

  • get a deep knowledge about the different biomass fuels and their thermophysical properties
  • understand the different thermochemical conversion techniques of biomass
  • acquire a deep understanding of the different biofuels and biogas production and their applications
  • understand the steam cycles used in biomass cogeneration plants
Contents:Types and sources of biomass fuels; Photosynthesis and the carbon cycle; Organic biofuel plants and crops; Physical and thermal properties of biomass fuels; Solid biomass, pelleting and briquetting; Thermochemical conversion of biomass(Combustion, Gasification, Pyrolsis); Biochemical conversion (Digestion, Fermentation); Biogas; Biogas anaerobic digestion; Types of Biogas reactor or digester, design and construction features; Utilization and application of biogas; Alternative liquid fuels; Bioethanol production and its application; Biodiesel Production and its application; Thermodynamic cycles and engines for biomass power generation; The organic Rankine cycle, The Stirling engine, Reciprocating engine; Biomass small scale combined heat and power plants; Municipal Solid waste
