Learning Outcome:Research Methodology:
  • Understanding waves and instabilities in advanced hydrodynamics.
  • Research projects: preparedness to scientific work, research oriented presentation and documentation skills, identification of research oriented master thesis topics.

European Language skills (except English).
Contents:Research Methodology:
  • Hydrodynamic basic equations: Euler, Navier-Stokes, continuity, energy, concentration(s); Surface waves: Potential flow, deep and shallow water, solitones, Tsunamis, capillary waves; Instabilities: general principles, bifurcation theory, classification; Unstable systems: Kelvin-Helmholtz, Rayleigh-Taylor, convection, mixtures, thin films.
  • Typical working steps in a research project, reserach project reports and poster, reserach presentation and journal papers. Presentation of actual research projects from EuroAquae partners and alumni as well as external partners (e.g. PIK, GFZ, UFZ, TU Berlin/Kompetenzzentrum Wasser, IGB) in seminars, identification of Master Thesis topics for Semester 4
European Language skills:
  • German Language course, optional courses on other European languages except English.
Recommended Prerequisites:Basic skills in hydroengineering and hydroinformatics
Mandatory Prerequisites:No successful participation in associated phase-out module 41511 Research Introduction.
