Students will be taught the how to observe and understand artefacts that are to be presented to visitors, be they members of the same cultural context or coming with a different cultural background.
Contents:The idea to collect artefacts is as old as mankind. Presenting collections is quite old, too. The term „museum“, for example, is derived from the sanctuary of Muse – goddesses of the arts. The popular idea of presenting collections started at the end of the 18th century in the beginning oft the 19th century. Age of reasons forced aristocracy and rich merchants to open their collections to the public, thus becoming part oft the new education system.
Presenting artefacts has always been related to the fields of architecture and design and to the idea of how to communicate the value and significance of the different pieces of a collection. Communication systems changed totally in the last 100 year and especially in the last 25 years.
In the seminar, the field of museology will be combined with the field of architecture and exhibition design. Every second week we shall visit a museum or an exhibition. By means of catalogues of museums and exhibitions, students will be introduced to and discuss structures, classification systems, information systems, spaces itself and results of communication. The result will be a first valuation of the examined different concept of art presentations.
