Learning Outcome:Students know how to familiarize themselves with a specific new topic and establish a sound understanding of it. They have acquired the skill to prepare a lecture, present it to an audience and defend it in a thorough discussion.
Contents:The topic and presentation are from the fields of electrodynamics, physical electronics, radio frequency engineering, and plasma science (e.g., interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter), including:
  • Electromagnetic radiation
  • Phenomenology of light propagation in matter
  • Interaction of light and matter
  • Magnetic phenomena, constitutive relations, and plasmas
  • Quantum description of absorption, emission, and light scattering
  • Spectroscopy
  • Optical cavities, stability, lasers
  • Nonlinear optics
  • Fiber optics and optical communication systems
