Learning Outcome:In this course you will learn various aspects of academic English, from writing essays, participating in seminar discussions and giving presentations, to developing your reading skills and giving and receiving feedback.  The course is designed to help develop the skills needed to communicate and participate in an academic setting, while also preparing you for the use of English in the business world.  By the end of the course you should be able to communicate effectively in a variety of situations while also gaining knowledge on a wide range of topics.
Contents:Speaking: preparing for and taking part in a seminar discussion, participating in a tutorial discussion, giving a short presentation, interpreting and discussing written feedback
Writing: understanding essay titles, creating and evaluating a plan for writing, using noun phrases and relative clauses to add sophistication to your writing, learning to write essay introductions, body paragraphs and conclusions
Reading: reading for main ideas and for detail, understanding and extracting key factual information in a text, identifying main ideas and supporting evidence, identifying the purpose, the argument and structure of a text
Listening: understanding the introduction, main ideas and organization of a lecture, recognizing key factual information in a lecture
Vocabulary: becoming familiar with academic vocabulary, inferring the meaning of unknown words, categorizing words, creating collocations
Recommended Prerequisites:Modules English B1.2, B2.1 or B2.2 or English skills at the level CEFR B1+/B2, completed exercise English for Academic Purposes B2.1

Teaching Materials and Literature:Oxford EAP “A course in English for Academic Purposes” Upper-Intermediate (B2)
Module Examination:Continuous Assessment (MCA)
Assessment Mode for Module Examination:Continuous tasks/homework (10% of the final grade), 
4 unit tests of 45 minutes each (30% of the final grade), 
1 written final test of 60 min (60% of the final grade).

The tests will be carried out online.

Remarks:This module especially aims at exchange students with an English language competence at level CEFR B1+/B2.
Additional course enrolment at the Language Centre is obligatory: https://www.b-tu.de/sprachen.
No more than 25 students can be accepted at each language course group.
