Learning Outcome:
Students know how to approach Europe and European transformation by using sociological theories of belonging, culture, and power, and to apply these to historical and current theoretical discourses in European contexts. What is more, students have fundamental knowledge in central approaches to European Studies, Post- and Decolonial Studies as well as Postsocialist Studies, Migration Studies and Transnationalization Studies and to apply these to the societal realities of Europe at the beginning of the 21st century.
 
They are able to:
·  understand the central positions and methods used in social and -cultural studies research
·  Understand and explain relations between culture, belonging, migration and transformation
·  Independently analyze, compare and discuss scientific texts and apply these to social phenomena
Contents:In the module, classical and newer approaches in European Studies, Post- and Decolonial Studies, Postsocialist Studies, Migration and Transnationalization Studies will be read and discussed.
Against this background, contemporary and historical questions/debates in the field of "Europe in Transformation" will be analyzed and discussed from the perspective of the social sciences. Towards a better understanding of transformation processes, a special focus lies on relational approaches to transnational realities and migratory movements, the European history of both Colonialism and Socialism, present processes of racialization and othering (coloniality), forms of re-membering etc..

  • Seminar / 4 Hours per Week per Semester

Module Examination:Continuous Assessment (MCA)
Assessment Mode for Module Examination:
  • Oral presentation, 15 min (40%)
  • Essay, 10-15 pages (30 %)
  • Participation in exercises and discussions (30%)
