Contents:

This study project UNESCO Heritage Governance invites students to apply and critically reflect on theoretical and institutional frameworks of UNESCO heritage governance for different and current real-world cases. Working individually or in small groups, students analyse specific case studies from different UNESCO Conventions, State Parties and governance contexts.

The Study project focuses on the application of international heritage conventions and policy frameworks into national and local governance arrangements, with particular attention to multi-level governance dynamics, stakeholder roles and actions as well as power plays. Students critically assess the effectiveness, coherence, and legitimacy of these processes in practice, including tensions between global ideals and local realities.

Using qualitative policy analysis and empirical methods such as content analysis, interviews, observations and case-based comparisons, students produce a written and/or other defined output demonstrating their ability to integrate theoretical insights with case-based analysis and articulate informed perspectives on contemporary challenges in UNESCO heritage governance.
