Learning Outcome:

After successful completion of this module, students will be able to:

  • Apply recognized international or regional conservation doctrines and management frameworks to documented heritage case studies – often in the immediate surroundings of the student’s place of residence, applying international standards and guidelines to local conservation and management analysis.
  • Conduct remote condition assessments and risk analyses using provided documentation (such as plans, photographs, GIS data, monitoring reports, or inventories) and on this basis identify threats, vulnerabilities, and priorities for intervention.
  • Develop objectives and strategies for conservation and management based on processes which define significance, articulate conservation requirements, outline management structures, and propose monitoring and evaluation mechanisms appropriate to the case context.
  • Critically assess past or ongoing conservation projects (e.g., restoration, adaptive reuse, reconstruction, safeguarding measures) regarding authenticity, reversibility, minimum intervention, and sustainability.
Contents:

This study project focuses on applied heritage conservation and management through practice-oriented project work in the online realm. Building upon international and regional conservation and management policy, students engage with concrete heritage case studies, which can include local sites, collections, or intangible practices accessible from their place of residence.

Study projects with an analytical focus introduce students to remote assessment methods, including analysis of plans, photographs and videos, GIS data, inventories, and monitoring reports, to identify risks, vulnerabilities, and priorities for intervention. Students may even develop conservation and management strategies by defining significance, specifying conservation requirements, outlining management structures, and proposing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms. Study projects with a critical evaluation focus consider past or ongoing conservation projects—such as restoration, adaptive reuse, reconstruction, or safeguarding measures—and analyze their quality and outcomes.

Within this module, case studies and project themes are selected according to their relevance and timeliness when the module is offered. These vary from semester to semester. The study project combines various teaching and learning methods, which may include:

Seminars, Lectures, Individual study, Group work, Workshops, Presentations, Field trips, Work with relevant databases, Interviews.

The number of teaching hours per week per semester (SWS) will depend on the project-specific teaching and learning methods. They will usually be 4 SWS.
