Learning Outcome:Rationale
Students will be able to deepen their knowledge of heritage management tools and to put these skills into reference with practical aspects of everyday’s challenges of managing a World Heritage site.

Referring to the World Heritage site "Wachau" students will learn about the everyday work of a World Heritage site manager in the most complex site form "Cultural Landscape". They will learn about policies and strategies for stakeholder participation, moderation and problem-solving strategies as well as about dealing with reporting and negotiating with institutions related to the working fields of a site manager (UNESCO, governments, European Union, …).

Working on the personal communication skills of the students will be a focus within this course.

Part 1: Lecture
The lecture will provide students with a wide-ranging introduction to basic and detailed knowledge on different aspects of managing a cultural heritage site, enabling them to act as generalists in their future career. They will learn to use management instruments to further cultural aims and projects and understand the key concepts of management specifically from the perspective of culture.

Part 2: Seminar
The seminar will provide students with the opportunity to further discuss and implement the concepts presented during the lecture including the preparation and implementation of applied work in the field of cultural management.
Contents:Part 1: Lecture
  • Examples of Practical Problems of World Heritage Management in a Cultural Landscape.
  • Management Plans in Reality and Practical Use.
  • Financing different types of projects.
  • Examples of stakeholder-integration, public participation, and networking.
  • Legal aspects of everyday site management.
  • Aspects of staff management, taxation, bookkeeping and related subjects.
Part 2: Seminar
On-site practical training:
  • Additional discussion on the contents of the lectures.
  • Training communication skills in close-to-life lab situations (leading meetings, writing minutes, negotiating).
  • Realizing the complexity of site management by playing and reflecting different roles in a Management Game for Heritage Management.
All these elements will be carried out in class and reflected and evaluated on the spot.

Personal work:
  • Designing a specific part of daily work within the range of tasks to be fulfilled by a site manager. The students will have the choice among a number of various topics provided by the lecturer, ranging from dealing with staff management or taxation issues to drafting a specific project and bidding for tenders.
Progress in completing this work will be monitored by a short presentation to be given by each student at the end of the module and will finally be assessed by giving in a seminar paper (length approx. 15 pages). The lecturer will be available for personal questions.
