22428 - Propaedeutic in Architecture Modulübersicht

Module Number: 22428 - module is no longer offered from SS 2014
Module Title:Propaedeutic in Architecture
  Propädeutikum Architektur
Department: Faculty 2 - Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning
Responsible Staff Member:
  • Gastprof. Casper, Jens
Language of Teaching / Examination:English
Duration:1 semester
Frequency of Offer: Every winter semester
Credits: 6
Learning Outcome:The propaedeutic course in Architecture serves to prepare students in the methods and terminology used in the subsequent cycle of workshops, on the following three levels:

  1. An exercise in Design Methodology prepares students for the workshops at eight different design schools, so they develop an awareness for, and acquire a repertoire of, analytical skills and tools for heterogeneous approaches in their project work for dealing with urban and architectural assignments as well as for making theoretical and self-reflective observations. The course will teach students to decipher design strategies in an objectifying manner, show them methods for acquiring practical knowledge and enable them to design processes.
  2. In the German Crash Course, all the non-German programme participants will jointly receive preparation for their nearly 11-months of attendance at the German university, enabling them to understand and use the German language in presentations and discussions within their professional milieu (explaining designs verbally with the aid of visual material).
Contents:(1) Instructor: V.Prof. Dr. Ing. Dagmar Jäger / Design Methodology with guest lecturers
(2) Instructor: TBA / German Crash Course

  1. Design Methodology (exercise): In a comparative discourse, students will become familiar with artistic and scientific methods of analysis from the areas of design methodology, interdisciplinary and creative teamwork, building research methods, design research and the artistic search for evidence. The exercises start off with an analysis of exemplary design projects and undergraduate theses done by the participants in the fields of architecture, urban planning and landscape architecture. The students’ heterogeneous background - from different countries, diverse cultures and various schools of thought and design - provides the foundations for taking a superordinate look at diverging positions and approaches. Visual, spatial, graphic, drawing-based, and text-oriented analyses will be developed in three steps. The presentation and discussion of the analysis forms the methodical framework within which the spatial, political, historical and socio-cultural characteristics of heterogeneous local contexts are to be compiled for the subsequent project work in various media, documented digitally or by hand, and developed further or commented upon in the design assignments.
  2. German Crash Course: This course aims to impart language skills that are professionally relevant way. Working in small groups, and with different levels of language ability, the students will train their communication skills to prepare them to engage in daily social intercourse, take part in consultations and give presentations as part of their design work and development.
