Module Number: 22435 - module is no longer offered from SS 2014
Module Title:Reflection 1: Intermediate Colloquium and Reflection 2: Topic of Master's Thesis
Reflexion 1: Zwischenkolloquium und Reflexion 2: Masterthema
Department: Faculty 2 - Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning
Responsible Staff Member:
  • Gastprof. Casper, Jens
Language of Teaching / Examination:English
Duration:1 semester
Frequency of Offer: Every winter semester
Credits: 4
Learning Outcome:Reflection 1 & 2 build upon the first exercise in Design Methodology from the propaedeutic course.

Reflection 1: The student has a command of different methods and strategies of graphic, drawn, spatial, historical and artistic analysis and s/he applies methods from other disciplines in carrying out his/her own work. Reflective communication skills as well as traditional and digital presentation techniques, interdisciplinary team strategies and concepts for communicating and exhibiting work will be conveyed and applied to assess the results produced from the workshop and also used in the next work phase of the programme.

Reflection 2: The student is able to plan team and design processes, can independently organise design sequences with respect to instruments for precisely defining the questions that arise, can work out/choose the necessary areas of knowledge and methods needed to develop the solutions, can devise spatial programmes, and possesses know-how on models for teamwork, about managing and overseeing processes carried out in design teams, on the division into phases of analysis and design steps, and about developing expedient approaches for scheduling and for structuring complex projects.
Contents:Instructor: V.Prof. Dr. Ing. Dagmar Jäger with Guest Lecturers

Reflection 1: The intermediate colloquium serves to analyse and evaluate the first five workshops. In the first phase, the students will select material from the extensive results of the previous workshops, which will be visually reworked using appropriate methods of representation and communicated in a presentation. In a second step, small groups will develop an exhibition concept. The discussions about, and selection of, the material form the basis for the topic of the Master’s Thesis.
In a third phase, the exhibition will be realised together with all the students. In the fourth and last phase of the intermediate colloquium, as part of the exhibition the results will be presented to and reflected upon by invited lecturers from the partner universities and a selected audience. The ensuing discussion will establish topics to be examined in more depth and superordinate issues will be debated. This fourth part of the Intermediate Colloquium is an integral part of the research discourse between the universities and the lecturers and, at the same time, serves to evaluate and make corrections for the benefit of the upcoming workshops.

Reflection 2: The subject of this module is individual and joint evaluation of the entire cycle of workshops and the development of each individual’s topic for the Master’s thesis. The summarised presentation and evaluation of the eight workshops provides a basis for the working groups to focus on the potentials of individual topics by providing feedback. The results and recommendations of the Intermediate Colloquium will be taken into consideration when working out the thesis topics. Collective and interdisciplinary design methods and project planning approaches will be used for the Master’s Theses.
