Learning Outcome:Rationale
The class will give an introductory overview of the concept "Environmental and Resource Management". Both an integrative approach and a case study-oriented approach to environmental problems and their solution will be taken. Additionally, the class intends to give an introduction to methods of scientific work with special emphasis on information acquisition and information presentation.
 
Part "Introduction to ERM"
Objectives are to enable students to define and identify environmental problems and to enable students to apply management techniques to regional and global environmental problems. Students will be able
  • to overview the structure and philosophy of the Bachelor programme ERM and the research focus of the participating departments,
  • to judge the importance of environmental and resource management based on a first account of a variety of case studies.
Part "Introduction to Scientific Work"
Objectives are to enable students to gain relevant information about environmental problems, and to enable students to present the results of their literature reserarch in an acceptable form. Students will be able
  • to adequately use the university library, the INTERNET and other information sources,
  • to write a short scientific essay.
Contents:Part "Introduction to ERM"
  • The importance of economic aspects of environmental and resource management, legal aspects of ERM; environmental sociology
  • Project management and realization; assimilation capacity/carrying capacity as a tool for environmental management
  • Water supply and waste deposition in an urban area; biology serves waste management – sophisticated but simple solutions for a better environment, basics of hazardous wastes and contaminations
  • Systems thinking in science, industry and administration, sustainability from the viewpoint of an industrial firm
  • Environmental management and the energy paradigm
  • Information network Elbe sanitation (INES); integrated water management and decision support; anthropogenic impact on lakes and catchment areas
  • Syndromes of global change; environmental and strategic impact assessment
  • Biodiversity management; restoration of postmining landscapes

Assessment Mode for Module Examination:Part "Introduction to ERM" and Part "Introduction to Scientific Work"
  • Writing a midterm essay, 4 - 10 pages (20%)
  • Revised essay, 4 - 10 pages (30%)
  • Written examination, 60 min.  (50%):
    • In the beginning of the semester the module supervisor decides whether the examination is to be carried out in presence or in digital form (eTest).
