Learning Outcome:The module Gender Relations in Human Ecology is designed to shed light on one of the most powerful categories in society and culture – “Gender”. "Gender justice" or "gender equality/ equity" are often listed among the manifold objectives in the complex process of promoting "sustainable development". This module should enable the students to understand the genesis and diversity of concepts and theories explaining differences between women and men. Students should become familiar with these several theories and approaches and enlighten reasons for potential gender inequality and their impacts on categories of Human Ecology like the environment, society or culture, but also how these categories influence gender relations.
The final outcome could be the ability to apply appropriate "gender sensitive" strategies and instruments for an equal distribution of chances and to point advantages or disadvantages for women and men out.
Contents:The module consists of a combination of lecture and seminar sections.
The lecture-based parts provide an introduction to:
- different gender theories
- different political approaches to "gender equality/ equity"
The seminar sections serve to:
- apply gender theories to selected "real life" cases
- analyse the implications of gender in theses contexts
The students are encouraged to form working groups for further in-depth discussion of single topics as a basis for presentations in class.
