42422 - Protection of the Atmosphere Modulübersicht

Module Number: 42422 - module is no longer offered from SS 2018
Module Title:Protection of the Atmosphere
  Schutz der Erdatmosphäre
Department: Faculty 2 - Environment and Natural Sciences
Responsible Staff Member:
  • Dr. rer. nat. Will, Andreas
Language of Teaching / Examination:English
Duration:2 semesters
Frequency of Offer: Every semester
Credits: 6
Learning Outcome:Students are encouraged to do forecasts of (develop scenarios for) potential future changes based on incomplete knowledge. They shall experience the potentials of scenario statistics for environmental planning. The application in this module is to the protection of the atmosphere on the short-term (air quality) and the long-term (climate).
Contents:The module consits of two courses:

  1. Problem analysis
  2. The atmospheric greenhouse
  3. Man-made emissions
  4. Effect on the atmospheric composition
  5. Effect on the atmospheric greenhouse
  6. The biogeochemical carbon cycle
  7. Short introduction to climate modelling
  8. Series of presentations by students
Air Quality Assessment and Management (summer semester):
  1. Introduction
  2. Air quality assessment based on measured data
  3. Essentials of EU framework directive (1996)
  4. EU daughter directives
  5. EU data base for pollution measurements
  6. Deriving the spatial distribution of pollutants
  7. Use of air-quality models
  8. Determination of model quality (model evaluation)
  9. Air quality regulations in the U.S., Japan and China
  10. Series of presentations by students
In addition, the students have to work during the semester on a small research project and present their findings in a seminar towards the end of the semester.
