Learning Outcome: | Students know the physical and mathematical fundamentals of Particle Technology. They are able to describe common unit operations and phenomena of Particle Technology in terms of the fundamentals and apply physical models and mathematical methods to the solu-tions of common problems. |
Contents: | Particle size and shape: Equilibrium of forces on a particle, equation of particle motion and particle trajectory calculation. Examples of stationary and instationary particle motion, particle separation by sedimentation, sifting, fibrous Filters etc. Formal description of particle size distributions and separation processes, with calculations. Characterization of and flow through porous media and packings, filtration processes. Origin of intermolecular forces, sur-face tension and capillary phenomena. Capillary pressure curve of porous media, dewetting of filter cakes. VdW-forces between particle, electrostatic forces, capillary forces. DLVO the-ory, particle-particle interaction in liquids. Agglomeration technology. Vapour pressure of small droplets, nucleation, growth and ageing of dispersions. Sedimentation in concentrated dispersions, fluidized beds. Laboratory practice: Sieve analysis, capillary pressure curve, tabletting. |
