Short Course on Active Structures at The University of Tokyo

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science and Brandenburg University of Technology

The Chair of Hybrid Structures - Structural Concrete held a 6-day short course on Active Structures as an official class (2 CP) at The University of Tokyo from April 8th until April 13th. 22 Master and PhD students from The University of Tokyo (Bridge & Structure Lab, Concrete Lab, Geotechnical Lab, Department of Architecture) the Yokohama National University and Tokyo Institute of Technology participated.

Thematically, the course was related to the Chair’s current research on Active Structures. In the lectures the participants were first introduced to different concepts for active and lightweight structures as well as to concepts and systems for vibration control. This was followed by topics about modelling and model reduction as well as sensor, actuator and control design. The lectures were supplemented by seminars, where the knowledge was intensified and applied in computer-based exercises. Finally, the participants worked together in groups on a convertible structure and presented their results.

The course was supported by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and Brandenburg University of Technology.

For BTU students: A more comprehensive class (6 CP) on “Active Structures” is offered each summer term in the civil engineering master program.
