"A Short History of Architectural Opposition in Turkey"

Lecture by Esra Akcan (Ithaca, NY) on 8 November 2022

In her lecture, Esra Akcan will discuss how to become part of an opposition through architecture in a context where architecture and power are intracably linked. Given the justified associations between modernization and state introduced projects in many countries, established history often obscures the role of opposition practices (including their role in the acknowledgment of "modernist heritage"). This lecture defines three ways of being in opposition and discusses them by focussing on a few examples from Turkey.

The lecture by Esra Akcan will be held in conjunction with the workshop "The Past and the Present of Modernist Heritage in Ankara" - initiated and organized by Rengin Sazak, doctoral student at the Research Training Group 1913 at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. The lecture by Esra Akcan will be held in presence in Zeichensaal, Lehrgebäude 2 C at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. It can also be followed online via zoom. The link for online-participation will be available on the homepage of RTG on the day of the lecture.
