As part of the federal programme ‘Sanierung kommunaler Einrichtungen in den Bereichen Sport, Jugend und Kultur’ (SJK), the federal government has been funding the renovation of outdoor swimming pools since 2022 with a focus on energy efficiency improvements and resource conservation. The aim of the research project is to systematically analyse the potential savings associated with these measures.

In total, more than 30 outdoor swimming pools are being studied. The focus is on savings in the areas of energy, greenhouse gas emissions, and water and chemical usage. To this end, an assessment methodology is being developed that allows conclusions to be drawn about resource requirements before and after refurbishment and illustrates the differences.
