Transport in Figures
‘Transport in Figures’ (ViZ) has been the standard reference work on transport statistics in Germany for more than 50 years now. This annual compendium, running to around 380 pages, contains up-to-date figures and time series on all relevant topics in the fields of mobility and transport. The content ranges from annual figures on investment in infrastructure, through data on transport infrastructure, accidents, traffic volume and transport performance, to information on the daily mobility behaviour of Germans and emissions. This wealth of data is rounded off by a chapter featuring key indicators that present Germany in a European context.
The numerous tables are updated using various data sources. To this end, official statistics, statistics from associations and companies, as well as the results of current research projects and transport surveys, are analysed and, in some cases, consolidated on the basis of model calculations.
In particular, the annual updating and extrapolation of vehicle mileage and passenger transport volumes require extensive modelling, incorporating key data from official statistics on, amongst other things, population trends, car fleets and fuel consumption. Since 2025, the Infrastructure and Mobility Planning chair has been involved in the annual updating and further development of the models for vehicle mileage and passenger transport volumes. A key focus is on further developing the modelling approach for mapping vehicle mileage and fuel consumption, taking into account the availability of new data sources, in particular the 2026 mileage survey and the research project ‘Further development of the mileage statistics “Traffic in Kilometres” (VK) through register-based mileage analysis at the KBA’.
