2nd Brandenburg Science Slam - Science Communication in a Different Way

A science slam is a special format of science communication. Topics and findings from higher education and research are made accessible to a broad audience in short presentations. Scientists present their research areas and results in their popular science talk. In doing so, they compete for the favor of the audience. The presenters each have ten minutes to inspire those present with their contribution. The special feature: The so-called "slammers" all come from Brandenburg's university and science landscape. At each location, scientists from as many different universities and non-university institutions in Brandenburg as possible compete against each other.

Bastian Prell, slammer at the Science Slam 2022 in the Kulturfabrik Fürstenwalde, describes his experience as follows: "As a scientist, you are challenged to summarize your own topic within ten minutes in a way that attracts an audience, and at the same time you can show that research is always fun somewhere. At the last Science Slam, I was already very enthusiastic about how curiosity and enthusiasm spilled over between the presenters and the audience. This is a successful format for a university to be present in regions that don't have a campus or research facility around the corner. I benefited from dealing with my topic in this unconventional way and also had a lot of fun at the event. I can only recommend participation to everyone,

Participating slammers can take part in an online workshop with Dr. Julia Offe to prepare for the event. The founder of www.scienceslam.de has been organizing science slams throughout Germany for more than ten years, in which scientists present their research projects on stage in a rousing, understandable and entertaining way. In the workshops, interested parties receive valuable tips for a successful science slam presentation. The workshop dates have already been set:

• April 11 and 18, 2023, 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
• May 3 and 10, 2023, 10:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
