Excursion to social housing construction in Barcelona

In a design seminar and excursion, students from BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg took an in-depth look at the innovative urban development of the Catalan metropolis and brought home insights for the future of housing.

The "Learning from Barcelona" project at BTU's Urban Design chair was dedicated to researching and analyzing Barcelona's innovative housing policy, which is internationally regarded as a model for socially responsible and sustainable urban development.

In a three-part course series consisting of a seminar, excursion and design studio, Master's students of Urban and Regional Planning and Architecture dealt intensively with the social, political and economic aspects of housing construction in Barcelona.

Thanks to the support of the BTU Sponsors' Association, 25 students traveled to Barcelona in May 2024 to visit the projects discussed in the seminar on site and to exchange ideas with the residents about the development processes and experiences in communal living. Many of the students took away from the visits how important it is to include sufficient space for communal activities in the designs and that social housing can and must be designed not only functionally, but primarily in terms of spatial quality.
