Anti-Semitism in everyday life: Impressive reading by Juna Grossmann at Spreekino Spremberg

Juna Grossmann's reading "Schonzeit vorbei: On living with daily anti-Semitism" on September 18, 2024 at Spreekino Spremberg invited interested parties and developed into an intense and moving evening.

The event, which took place as part of the lecture series for the Science Year 2024, addressed anti-Semitism in everyday life and focused on the individual experience of hatred and exclusion.

Grossmann reported on her many years of work in museums and memorials as well as her personal life as a Jewish German in Berlin. The passages she read from her book were particularly impressive, in which she described real dialogs and anti-Semitic incidents that happened to her both in her private and professional life. The direct, open way in which she spoke about these experiences touched the audience noticeably. Many visitors were visibly affected by the experiences she described.

In addition to her own experiences, Grossmann also spoke about anti-Semitic situations experienced by friends, acquaintances and colleagues in everyday life. These personal accounts made it clear how much everyday anti-Semitism affects the lives of many Jewish people in Germany. But also how one can and should oppose it.

In the discussion that followed, Grossmann's open manner encouraged many visitors to share their own experiences. A lively debate ensued about where today's anti-Semitism originated and how we as a society can actively and sustainably combat this form of hatred. Topics such as education, civil courage and the need for a critical culture of remembrance were at the forefront.

We would also like to thank the moderator, Konstanze Schirmer, who led the evening with aplomb and created the space for an open and respectful discussion. The event was a successful contribution to the lecture series in the Science Year 2024.
