BTU appoints Professor Hilmar von Lojewski as honorary professor for "Urban Planning and Governance"

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) is delighted to welcome Professor Hilmar von Lojewski as a new honourary professor at Faculty 6 of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning.

Hilmar von Lojewski was awarded the title by BTU President Prof. Dr Gesine Grande at a ceremony on 23 October 2024. The appointment took place as part of the farewell ceremony for the Master's graduates of the Urban and Regional Planning study programme.

Professor Hilmar von Lojewski is an alderman for urban development, construction, housing and transport at the Association of German Cities and heads the "Urban Development, Construction, Housing, Transport" department at the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport Affairs. With a degree in spatial planning from TU Dortmund University and many years of experience in leading positions - including as Head of Department for Urban Development in Berlin and as an international planning consultant for the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) - Professor Hilmar von Lojewski brings outstanding expertise and broad specialist knowledge to the field of "Urban Planning and Governance" at BTU.

"Hilmar von Lojewski and his expertise are an enrichment for the Institute of Urban Planning. And not only with regard to the two urban planning degree programmes, but also with regard to our international programmes, in particular Urban Design and Sustainable Revitalisation. His wealth of experience makes him the 'perfect fit' for our intercultural academic community here at BTU," emphasises President Prof. Dr Gesine Grande.

The recently appointed honorary professor will create a valuable interface between science and practice in the region by contributing his extensive expertise to teaching and supporting students in the field of integrated Urban and Regional Planning. In particular, he will be involved in designing the Urban Planning (German) and Urban Design and Sustainable Revitalisation (English) study programmes. In this position, he will also be active in supervising theses for the BTU's international programmes.

Previously, Hilmar von Lojewski worked at various international and national stations in Urban Planning and Development and has been examining trainee urban planners at the Higher Examination Office for the Higher Technical Administrative Service since 1996. In addition to his practical expertise, he has extensive teaching experience, which he gained at the University of Stuttgart, the BTU and the TU Berlin, among others. His teaching activities are therefore characterised by in-depth knowledge and practice-oriented experience, which will provide students with valuable insights into the challenges and strategies of urban development at a local and international level.

Professor Hilmar von Lojewski will also strengthen the BTU's network with other universities, municipal authorities and planning institutions through his teaching activities and his network in the German Association of Cities and at international level. These collaborations not only provide students with insights into current planning processes, but also offer potential starting points for internships abroad and projects in Germany and abroad.

With the appointment of Professor Hilmar von Lojewski, the BTU is emphasising the importance of practical teaching and committed urban development and is looking forward to working with him.
