80th anniversary: "The day the war came back to Cottbus"

The Cottbuser Aufbruch, in which the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) is actively involved, invites you to a commemoration on Saturday, 15 February 2025, at 2 pm on the Cottbus Altmarkt under the motto "The day the war came back to Cottbus".

For many decades, we lived in safety; violence and the shifting of borders did not seem to be part of the political discourse since the end of the Cold War. But this certainty no longer exists in 2025. Eighty years after the end of the Second World War, we are once again seeing death and destruction in Europe

In more and more countries, political forces are on the rise, using threats and military force to realise their goals. The memories and knowledge of the destructive power and the millions of victims of the Second World War seem to be fading. This makes it all the more important to remember what happened, because the bombing of German cities was a consequence of the National Socialist war of aggression. Responsibility for the future also means looking back at the past without historical distortion.

In Cottbus, 15 February 1945 is a day of remembrance of the horrors and victims of war. Many people lost their lives on this day, several thousand people and refugees lost their homes and possessions. Shortly before the end of the war, parts of the city were reduced to rubble by a bomb corridor from south to north.

All BTU members are also called upon to take part in the rally organised to mark the occasion.
