Excursion to the cement manufacturer: Students gain practical insights at CEMEX

Practical and exciting: around 40 students from BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg gained exclusive insights into the production processes of a key and climate-politically challenging building material: cement, during an excursion to the production site of cement manufacturer CEMEX.

The Decarbonisation and Transformation of Industry (DTI ) chair organised an exciting excursion at the end of May 2025 as part of the interdisciplinary English-language module "Communication of Science and Technology". It went to the production site of cement manufacturer CEMEX in Rüdersdorf near Berlin. Around 40 students from various study programmes were given exclusive insights into the manufacturing processes of cement - a key building material that is also challenging in terms of climate policy - as part of a comprehensive guided tour.

Focus in summer semester 2025: the German cement industry

In summer semester 2025, the module will focus on the topic of "Decarbonisation and sustainability transformation in the German cement industry" as project work. The students had the task of developing science communication videos and group presentations on this topic for various target groups - from children to political decision-makers.

Students gained deep insights into current transformation processes

The excursion not only provided the participating students with deep insights into current transformation processes in the cement industry, but also gave them the opportunity to collect video and audio material for their science communication videos and group presentations. Last but not least, the BTU students had the opportunity to talk directly to industry representatives during the excursion to CEMEX.
