Australian sun instead of Lusatian black ice

Michelle is studying to become a primary school teacher at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. She is currently spending the semester at Deakin University in Melbourne.

The decision to go to Australia was an easy one for Michelle: She had always wanted to live abroad and her English major quickly made it clear to her: She wanted to go to an English-speaking country.
"Australia particularly appealed to me because of its openness, nature and, quite honestly, the seasons. While winter begins in Germany, I enjoy the start of summer here," says the student teacher.

A semester abroad in Australia has many advantages, Michelle believes. "You improve your language in everyday life and in your studies, get to know a new teaching and learning culture and meet an incredible number of people from all over the world," she says of her experiences. The campus atmosphere at her exchange university, Deakin University, is international, lively and very supportive.

However, there are also a few challenges, Michelle explains: "The long distance from home, the higher cost of living and the long journey. In addition, the tuition fees and rents are extremely high compared to BTU and Lusatia."

The student teacher would always opt for a semester abroad in Australia. She sees the time away from home as an enormous enrichment, both professionally and personally.

Michelle advises students who are still unsure whether a semester abroad is right for them: "Have the courage! I was also afraid and had doubts because it's so far away and at first you live all alone in a foreign country. But I made friends very quickly and haven't even felt homesick yet."

"If you have the chance to do a semester abroad, you should definitely take it! It was the best decision for me and I'm grateful that BTU offers such opportunities," concludes Michelle.
