The new game "Monopoly Lausitz" is now available - Cottbus and the BTU are among them
In addition, the presentation was a real world premiere: The Monopoly Lusatia Edition is the first trilingual Monopoly in the world. All texts on the game board, the event and community cards as well as in the accompanying booklet are trilingual in German, Lower Sorbian and Upper Sorbian. The translation was realized by Domowina, the Association of Lusatian Sorbs.
"With the Lusatian Monopoly, a very well-known and popular game, now about Lusatia and for Lusatia, goes to the start. In Monopoly, in addition to the ability to make decisions, you also need a strategy to get to your goal; it's no different in structural change. The broad participation of the people of Lusatia in the selection of the playing fields shows the joy of co-design in many areas. I am curious to see which city will replace Schlossallee as the most expensive location on the playing field. The good cooperation with Saxony also shows in the game, one Lusatia and three languages," says Dr. Klaus Freytag, Lusatia Representative of the Prime Minister of the State of Brandenburg.
"Playtime is family time and therefore time for entertainment - it's nice when the play also takes place in one's own mother tongue. For us Sorbians, it's a great thing that our languages are now involved in the world-famous classic game Monopoly," says Dawid Statnik, Chairman of Domowina.
Prof. Dr. Gesine Grande, President of the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU), is delighted about the launch of the new game and says: "Who doesn't know it, the exciting game that brings together young and old, young and old all over the world. Monopoly Lausitz features a new variation of the classic game that focuses on our region with its traditions and languages. I like the idea that Monopoly Lausitz is played enthusiastically in many families and that they make a stop at the BTU."
For the two translators, the Monopoly Lausitz edition was a real challenge - but one that was gladly accepted. "I have not been a Monopoly player before, but I find the game very exciting," says Erwin Hanuš, translator for Lower Sorbian. And Božena Braumanowa, translator for Upper Sorbian, adds: "We have partly entered new linguistic territory with the project. There was a lot to consult, and sometimes it helped to look at the neighbors, at the Czech Monopoly."
In addition to the 22 streets, many details of the game were individualized and adapted to Lusatia. For example, all the texts on the event and community cards have been changed, and the packaging and playing field have been provided with numerous sights from Lusatia. To make the game especially fun, the creators have come up with a number of ideas. For example, on one field of the Lusatia Edition, you have to pay not for income tax as in the original, but for a Sorbian language course.
"This and many other highlights make Monopoly Lusatia a very special Monopoly Edition," says Florian Freitag of Zwickauer polar|1 GmbH, which developed the game together with the Düsseldorf-based games publisher Winning Moves. "In the layout process, it once again became clear how much Lusatia has to offer. But by no means have all the sights and attractions made it into the game; there simply wasn't enough space for them." Each game comes with an accompanying booklet containing texts on the history and special features of each location.
The anticipation in Lusatia is already enormous. More than 4,000 advance orders have been placed. Last year, the inhabitants of Lusatia had already cast more than 100,000 votes to determine from the 130 suggestions the 22 towns and communities that absolutely had to be on the field. The top vote-getter received more than 5,000 votes. The games will be delivered immediately after the presentation. "We strive to ensure that all pre-orderers have their copy in their hands within the first few days after the presentation of the game," says Florian Freitag.
