Growing research strength: number of doctoral students at FGW increases rapidly

More and more young researchers are taking advantage of the opportunity to earn a doctorate or habilitate at the new Faculty of Health Sciences Brandenburg (FGW). Currently, 52 persons are pursuing a Dr. med. and 32 a Dr. rer medic.

The majority of the doctoral students come from the Brandenburg Theodor Fontane Medical School (MHB), but researchers from the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg and the University of Potsdam have also registered for doctoral studies. Four doctoral theses have now been defended. Seven procedures have been opened for habilitations. The first successful habilitation candidate is the dermatologist Georgios Nikolakis, who was able to present the latest research results on the skin disease acne inversa in his thesis.

The increased number of doctoral studies and habilitations registered is an expression of the growing research reputation of the still young Faculty of Health Sciences Brandenburg. "Many clinicians take advantage of the opportunity to open up additional career paths in science through doctoral studies. This is another way to bind medical professionals to the state of Brandenburg in the longer term," says the dean of the FGW, Prof. Notger Müller, MD. The possibility of doctoral studies at the Faculty of Health Sciences also increases the attractiveness of studying medicine at MHB. "Many prospective students already ask during the application process whether they can complete their studies with a doctoral degree," Müller said. As MHB's student numbers increase, so do registrations for doctoral studies. This trend will continue when MHB opens another study programme in dentistry in the 2024 summer semester. Scientific Staff Members of the FGW who have not studied medicine can obtain a doctorate in medicine at the faculty. The subject spectrum ranges from bioinformatics to health care research to rehabilitation. To provide the best possible support for doctoral students, the faculty offers an interdisciplinary qualification program.

"It teaches skills for planning and conducting studies, explains rules of good scientific and clinical practice, and raises awareness of ethical aspects of research work," explains rehabilitation physician Prof. Heinz Völler, MD, who heads the program. "In addition, the doctoral candidates acquire the necessary know-how here for writing scientific publications as well as for the expert presentation and discussion of their research results," says Völler, who chairs the FGW's doctoral committee.

The Faculty of Health Sciences was founded in 2018 as a joint faculty of the University of Potsdam, the Brandenburg Theodor Fontane Medical School and the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg. It forms the core of the Brandenburg Health Campus. The aim is to develop new types of medical, nursing and medical-technical care services as well as innovative study programmes. In cooperation with other universities and research institutions, the faculty will contribute to improving medical care in the Brandenburg region.
