Forum "Making Sense of Citizen Sensing" - Opportunities and Challenges of Citizen Science for the Quality of Air and Life in Cities
How can citizens actively shape the quality of air and life in their city? What role does citizen science play when it comes to reducing traffic pollution, sharpening environmental perception and collecting and analysing environmental data in a meaningful way and using it to help shape Urban Planning?
The forum "Making Sense of Citizen Sensing" invites you to reflect on the opportunities and challenges of citizen science projects in the measurement of quality of life (in particular air quality and traffic volume) as part of the "Sensing Emissions" project funded by the Ministry of Research, which has developed a digital citizen science toolkit for measuring, analysing and improving environmental quality in public spaces (see also: sensem.s-v.de).
In a varied programme of keynote speeches, a data karaoke and working groups, we will discuss practical issues with stakeholders from practice, politics and research:
- How can processes in citizen science projects be designed in a participatory and needs-appropriate way, especially in the context of dynamically changing urban spaces?
- Which digital tools and methods help to make complex environmental data accessible and understandable?
- How can we create a new awareness of urban spaces through joint research in different living environments?
- How can citizens be given a stronger voice in urban design through citizen science?
The event is aimed at researchers, citizens' initiatives, administrations and all those who are committed to the future of our cities. Together we want to find out how science, technology and citizen participation can go hand in hand to reclaim a right to the city and create new perspectives for more liveable cities.
