Study Project - between arable soil & air …

There are more things in arable soil and air, than are dreamt of in your philosophy. A thought along those lines might come to mind when looking at the farmstead ‘Müggenhof’, located at the northern tip of the Baltic sea island of Usedom. The Müggenhof was founded in the 1930s as an auxilliary facility to the back then newly established research centres of the German Army and the German Air Force, which both served to advance German military technology.

While the Müggenhof forms part of the vast monumental landscape of Peenemünde (Denkmallandschaft Peenemünde), it is not publicly accessible. And while its historic fabric currently suffers from accelerating degradation, the conditions for its preservation are complex. Against this background, the approach of this study project is to document the state as is, to collect information on building materials and construction details, as well as on traces of use and modifications within the building fabric as documentary evidence of the farmstead´s history.

Two days of field work under actual conditions on site at Peenemünde will allow participants to train documentation methods while observing and noting relevant evidence regarding a historical building complex. At least one day of compulsory excursion will provide a general overview of the historical site of the Peenemünde Army research centre and its corresponding monumental landscape. As a by-product, participants have the chance to learn about and to discuss the individual approaches of different stakeholders involved in the interpretation and preservation of the monuments at the core of this case study, and to gain experience in identifying the needs regarding the research infrastructure of heritage sites.
