Vehicle mileage is a key indicator of traffic volume, environmental impact and road safety. Following the last primary survey in 2014, a new Vehicle Mileage Survey (VMS) will be carried out in 2026.

Like previous surveys, the 2026 Vehicle Mileage Survey (FLE) will be carried out as a series of sub-projects: the focus will be on a survey of vehicle owners regarding domestic mileage, conducted by the Federal Motor Transport Authority, and an estimate of domestic mileage based on observation and counting.

The project aims to support and evaluate the 2026 FLE. The Infrastructure and Transport Planning chair analyses the mileage data in comparison with previous surveys and other transport statistics to ensure methodological consistency and chronological context. Furthermore, a concept is being developed for making the data available to researchers and specialist users, so that the newly collected mileage data can be put to use.
