Faculty of Health Sciences records large number of registered doctorates and awards first doctoral degree

Samuel Thoma is the first doctoral student of the Faculty of Health Sciences (FGW) at the Brandenburg Theodor Fontane Medical School (MHB). The assistant physician of psychiatry at the Immanuel Klinik Rüdersdorf and research associate at the MHB receives his doctorate with work on Henri Maldiney's philosophy of psychoses.

"I was very pleased to be given the option of a doctorate at MHB, and I am honored to even be the first person to defend his doctoral thesis and now to receive the academic degree of Dr. med." says Dr. Thoma, who had previously received a Doctor of Philosophy.

"On behalf of MHB, I congratulate you, Dr. Thoma, most sincerely on the successful defense of your dissertation. The possibility to write dissertations is a milestone in the history of MHB and of enormous importance for our young university. This step gives a great boost to research activity and also increases the attractiveness of MHB," said a delighted Prof. Hans-Uwe Simon, President of the Brandenburg Medical School (MHB).

Founding Dean Prof. Dr. Cornelius Frömmel is also pleased about the first doctorate at the new faculty: "With the first award of a medical doctorate and the large number of other candidates currently in our structured doctoral program, the Faculty of Health Sciences demonstrates its growing capability in the area of promoting young scientists.

In the FGW's structured qualification program, doctoral candidates are specifically prepared for their research activities in medicine and health sciences. The focus is on various scientific issues, for example, 'How do I adequately prepare or critically read a clinical study?', 'What are the ethical considerations in the field of health research?' and 'How do I ensure good scientific or clinical practice?'"

The Faculty of Health Sciences (FGW) doctoral regulations went into effect Nov. 26, 2020. Since then, it has been possible for students, junior scientists* and physicians* at the three sponsoring universities to obtain doctorates through the FGW and to be awarded the two academic degrees of Dr. med. and Dr. rer. medic. Currently, there are about 50 additional doctoral procedures, which will gradually be completed in the coming months.
