BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg continues to appoint fair and transparent - DHV confirms seal of approval for another five years

Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU) is entitled to use the seal of approval of the German University Association (DHV) for fair and transparent appointment negotiations for another five years, which it has held since March 15, 2019. It has thus successfully passed the re-audit process that is due after three years.

The BTU is one of the few German universities with the DHV seal of approval for fair appointments.

Since the first assessment, the interaction between the faculties, the responsible administrative departments and the university management in the preparation of the appointment negotiations has been further optimized, the DHV announced. The BTU knows how to convince as a university of short decision-making processes with an approachable presidium. From the point of view of the scientists, appointment negotiations always took place in a very good and appreciative atmosphere. This is also reflected in the appointment policy. The fact that the BTU succeeds in 75.5 percent of all cases in winning the first-place candidate on the appointment list is an indication of this. Other strengths of the appointment process include appropriate equipment and compensation packages, as well as a welcoming culture. Especially in the area of "dual career support" and the compatibility of family and career, the BTU is very well positioned, he said.

"Appreciation, transparency, fairness, cosmopolitanism, tolerance, family-friendliness - these are all values that are important to us at the BTU and that we live in the university community. We are pleased that this has been recognized by the academics and has contributed to our being allowed to continue to carry the seal of approval of the German University Association," says University President Prof. Dr. Gesine Grande.

However, the DHV still sees potential for development in certain areas. For example, the information policy could be made even more proactive by expanding the existing appointment monitor with detailed information on the status of the process. The BTU plans to do this in the future through digital application and appointment management, as Gesine Grande confirms: "The plans for this are already well advanced."

The re-audit process is based on the first quality seal process, which is based on a questionnaire, and additional re-audit questions. The focus in the evaluation was placed on fairness, appreciation, transparency and reliability in the appointment and retention processes. Statements from the university were also included in the evaluation. In addition, interviews were conducted with professors appointed to the respective university on their experiences in the appointment process, as well as the experiential knowledge of DHV justices. The DHV advises academics in around 70 percent of all appointment and retention negotiations in Germany.

In addition to BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, RWTH Aachen University, the University of Cologne, TU Kaiserlautern, FernUniversität in Hagen, the University of Duisburg-Essen, the University of Bremen, the University of Siegen, the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich, the University of Hanover, the University of Hohenheim, the University of Münster, the University of Bayreuth, the University of Wuppertal, the University of Mainz and the TU Chemnitz have so far been awarded the DHV seal of approval for transparent and fair appointment negotiations. In addition, the Department of Medicine at Goethe University Frankfurt and the University Hospital Frankfurt have been awarded the DHV seal of approval for fair and transparent appointment procedures in university medicine.
