Faculty 3: University Award for the Best Master Thesis 2021

Moritz Berneis, M.Sc., receives the award for his thesis "Presentation and evaluation of possible applications of Blockchain Technology in Supply Chain Management", Supervision: Prof. Dr. habil. Herwig Winkler and Dipl.-Ing. Devis Bartsch, Department of Production Management.

Scholars and practitioners have recognized the potential of BCT in supply chain management (SCM) for some time. Current literature on BCT, especially in the context of cryptocurrencies, is abundant, but published case studies and concrete examples in the industrial context are lacking so far. The master thesis therefore aims to identify, among other things, possible reasons for the few real implementations of BCT in the industrial context to date. In doing so, it is also to be evaluated whether the technology may not yet be mature enough for practical use in some areas.

A comprehensive and structured literature review will identify concepts for the use of BCT in SCM in terms of economic benefits. Subsequently, the general functionalities as well as the weaknesses and problems in the implementation of BCT will be elaborated. Additionally, a cluster analysis on the topics of the relevant literature will be performed. In the cluster "Possible applications of BCT in SCM", among others, the sub-clusters of food and healthcare supply chains will be addressed and analyzed in detail. In addition to the specific use cases, an exemplary logistics process will be presented, showing the benefits of BCT for each individual process step. Subsequently, the value propositions of BCT will be evaluated and analyzed.
