Interdisciplinary teaching as a trademark - 30 years of architectural studies in Cottbus

Students and faculty of BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg celebrate together on August 12 and 13, 2022: The best exam papers are honored. BTU President Prof. Gesine Grande opens a summer party in front of the teaching building 2C/D. An exhibition of student projects in the studios invites interested parties to learn more about architectural teaching on Saturday.

Cottbus has made a name for itself among architects. The architecture program is characterized in particular by the good supervision of students during project studies in well-equipped studios. This is very well received by the students. They regularly ensure a good rating in the relevant university rankings and make Cottbus attractive for students and teachers from Germany and abroad. The personal, family-like atmosphere at the faculty and on campus offers plenty of scope for the development of creative ideas and close cooperation with the related fields of urban planning and civil engineering.

Solving complex problems from drafting to design to technical execution in construction practice belongs closely together at the Faculty of Architecture, Civil Engineering and Urban Planning.

"Students learn with us during their studies what is essential in later professional practice: to take into account the increasingly complex requirements of buildings as early as the design stage. In the so-called "Cottbus Model", architectural design, art, history and engineering are each taught by experts from their respective fields. Our courses are held with interdisciplinary groups, projects are supervised in interdisciplinary teams. In this way, we pursue the idea from the very beginning of bringing together future partners in building design and construction during the course of study," says Prof. Karen Eisenloffel, head of the Institute of Architecture at the university and holder of the Chair of Structural Design, and emphasizes: "In this way, students not only learn to look beyond the boundaries of their own subject. They prepare themselves early on for the task of the architects responsible for building design. After all, they will later have to take on the leading role in the team of planners when designing buildings. In this respect, the diverse perspectives that architecture students experience during their studies at BTU should not be underestimated with regard to their future careers."

Note for prospective students in the Bachelor of Architecture: In particular, the exhibitions in the publicly accessible studios on Saturday, August 13, 2022, provide prospective students and their families with valuable insights into working methods, creativity, the joy of experimentation as well as the research power of the faculty. Furthermore, it is the perfect opportunity to get into conversation with students and teachers.

Although today's BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg was founded in 2013, the study of architecture can look back on 30 years of experience and an equally long tradition. At both predecessor institutions, the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus and the Lausitz University of Applied Sciences, architecture has been taught as an independent degree program since 1991.
