Public lectures on energy transition and structural change

The "Open BTU" lecture series will kick off the winter semester on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, 5:30 p.m., in Audimax 1 on the Cottbus Central Campus of the Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg (BTU). The opening lecture will focus on the international dimension of the coal phase-out.

Prof. Dr. Jan Steckel, who heads the Department of Climate and Development Economics at the BTU, will speak on the topic "Beyond Lusatia: How the coal phase-out can succeed internationally." With this, he will kick off the focus on "Energy Transition and Structural Change in Germany and Globally." All interested parties are invited to attend. Registration is not required. Admission is free.

In order to still achieve the international climate targets, coal-fired power generation must already be reduced by up to 70 percent this decade and replaced by low-emission technologies - not only in Germany, but globally. The lecture outlines the political and economic challenges and discusses possible solutions. It focuses in particular on the international dimension of the problem.

Date: Wednesday, October 19, 2022, 5:30 to 7 p.m. Location: Audimax 1 at the BTU central campus, Konrad-Wachsmann-Allee 3, 03046 Cottbus, Germany.

Jan Steckel is a professor of climate and development economics at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg and heads the working group on climate change mitigation and development at the Mercator Research Institute for Global Commons and Climate Change (MCC) in Berlin. He holds a PhD in economics and conducts research mainly on the role of developing countries in climate change mitigation. Prof. Steckel has contributed to various reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and was lead author on coal phase-out in the United Nations Environment Programme's Emissions Gap Report.

About the "Open BTU" lecture series From October 19, 2022 to January 25, 2023, the "Open BTU" public lecture series will offer interesting insights into exciting areas of science. This semester's topic is "Energy transition and structural change in Germany and globally". The interdisciplinary lectures incorporate current research approaches at BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg. With this educational format, which is open to all interested parties, the university's Center for Continuing Education supports lifelong learning and promotes the transfer of knowledge and ideas in the region by addressing socially relevant issues.
