New certificate program qualifies students for work with digital music media

Digital music media offer multiple and inclusive approaches to music education. The studies leading to certification in Advanced Music Education  qualify musicians and musically trained graduates of pedagogical professions in two semesters for musical education and project work with digital music media and can be completed extra-occupationally. Registration for the program, which begins in October 2023, is open immediately and until September 15.

Nationwide, about 90 percent of current music productions are produced with digital programs and instruments, and the digital audio workstation (DAW) is expected to become instrument of the year in 2026. However, digital music production has rarely been offered in musical and Music Pedagogy training programs to date.

The extra-occupational certificate program Advanced Music Education offers an introduction to the professionalization of digitally competent musicians and music educators. In eight modules and two semesters, technical, artistic, pedagogical and organizational competencies are taught in order to realize musical or music mediating projects with digital music media for different target groups. An extension of the program to a master's program is planned. However, it is also possible to take individual modules. The language of teaching is German. Besides the BTU in Cottbus, the study location is the Center for Popular Music Brandenburg (ZPOP)  in  Potsdam.

The program isled by Prof. Dr. Kiwi Menrath (BTU, Chair of Media Education: Aesthetic Practice in Social Work), Prof. Christiane Gerischer and Thomas Oestereich (ZPOP Education Brandenburg).

In particular, the program is aimed at music professionals, music pedagogues, school music teachers, future music mediators, musically trained social pedagogues, educators, curative education nurses, professionals in cultural education for children and young people, and music therapists. Students will receive a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) upon successful completion of the course or a certificate of attendance.
